CINECLUB – Cycle 12: Through the Eyes of HAL HARTLEY: The surreal, absurd, and intimate visions of a neglected American auteur

18 12 2011

Tuesday, December 20th – film starts at 9 p.m.

Selected and presented by Zoe Goldstein and Stephen Taylor.

20.12.2011: SIMPLE MEN (1992)

Hal Hartley’s third feature film, Simple Men opens with a robber, Bill, asking a bound and blindfolded security guard if he can take his Virgin Mary medallion. “Be good to her and she’ll be good to you,” says the guard. From there, Bill and his younger brother Dennis go off in search of their father, an anarchist who committed a bombing many years ago. The only clue is an old phone number on Long Island. So begins this oddball narrative about the strangeness of how fate unfolds.

Pauline Curnier Jardin presents: Grotta Profunda les humeurs du gouffre

14 12 2011

Monday, December 19th – at 9 p.m.

Artist Pauline Curnier Jardin will present her latest short film, an experimental fiction. This is a Berlin premiere, months before the film is scheduled to be shown in art film festivals in France.

|||||

The girl Bernadette has just seen an apparition – it may have been the Immaculate Conception. In her confusion, she is drawn upwards into the majestic mountains where she falls asleep, exhausted, on a round stone. The child feels she is falling in love with the Virgin. In a semi-conscious state, she finds herself inside a cave where an extraordinary cosmogony unfolds, meant to teach her about the great questions of the origins of humanity. An ancestral howl can be heard, water pearls and falls in pools beneath the stalactites, the walls of the cave twist and turn tortuously: nature itself is entering into the initiatory ritual undertaken by our little visionary…

|||||

CINECLUB – Cycle 12: Through the Eyes of HAL HARTLEY

11 12 2011

Tuesday, December 13th – film starts at 9 p.m.

Hal Hartley’s second excursion into absurd suburbia, and a much loved cult favourite which was (and still is) totally overlooked by the mainstream, Trust is a witty film that stretches and transcends, and ultimately breaks down, the definition of “romantic comedy.” Many consider this the best film Hartley has made.
